FCC/CE Testing and Certification for Wireless Networking Devices

If you’re developing a wireless networking device, your product needs to meet regulatory requirements before it can legally hit the market. That means your product must pass FCC and/or CE certification before it can legally be sold in the U.S. or Europe.

The process can feel like a maze–RF testing, EMC limits, documentation requirements. We work with product creators, hardware teams, and startups to get devices certified quickly, with no surprises along the way.

We specialize in FCC & CE compliance for devices of this type and can make the testing and certification process simple, so you can bring your device to market successfully.

Types of Wireless Networking Devices We Can Test & Certify

If your device transmits or receives signals wirelessly, it likely falls under FCC and CE regulatory scope. Here are the most common types of products we work with:

  • Wireless HDMI Extender
These transmit high-definition video over radio frequencies–usually 5 GHz or 60 GHz bands. That puts them firmly under FCC Part 15 and CE RED compliance.

  • Wi-Fi Extender
Devices that boost Wi-Fi range must meet strict RF limits and be tested for spurious emissions, radiated power, and more.

  • Network Bridge
Whether wired-to-wireless or wireless-to-wireless, network bridges use radio modules that require certification to ensure they don’t interfere with other devices.

  • Mesh Wi-Fi Node
These are a growing category of smart networking hardware. Because they continuously transmit and receive, proper RF testing and CE marking are essential.

  • Smart Router
Routers with integrated software features–like remote management or IoT support–need both radio compliance and sometimes cybersecurity evaluation (for CE).

  • Powerline Adapter
These use existing electrical wiring to transmit data, but many models also include Wi-Fi functionality, which brings them under FCC/CE radio regulations.

  • Access Point
Often installed in enterprise or home settings, access points must comply with both emission standards and transmit power limits.

What to Know About FCC & CE Certification for Wireless Networking Devices

FCC certification is mandatory for products that emit radiofrequency energy and are sold in the United States. Wireless networking devices typically fall under FCC Part 15, which regulates unlicensed RF transmissions. You’ll need to test for things like radiated emissions, conducted emissions, spurious emissions, and peak output power.

CE certification is required for all wireless and electronic devices sold in the EU. Most networking gear falls under the Radio Equipment Directive (RED), along with the EMC Directive and sometimes the Low Voltage Directive. In some cases–especially for connected devices–you might also need to meet cybersecurity or interoperability standards.

The biggest difference? With CE, you self-declare compliance. That means you’re responsible for making sure your product meets all applicable directives and keeping a technical file on record. With FCC, you’ll need to go through a certified lab and possibly get an official equipment authorization.

You’ll typically need:

  • RF and EMC testing from an accredited lab

  • Safety evaluation (if power-related)

  • Full technical documentation (manuals, schematics, test reports)

  • Proper labeling (FCC ID, CE mark on packaging and device)

  • Retesting if you modify the design or firmware
