FCC/CE Testing and Certification for Computer Input Devices

If you’re building a computer input device, like a wireless mouse, ergonomic trackball, or multi-device Bluetooth pointer, then your devic needs FCC and CE certification before it can go into the market. Any device that transmits wirelessly or uses electronic components must meet regulatory standards before it can be legally sold in the United States or Europe.

FCC and/or CE compliance might not be the most exciting part of product development, but it’s essential. The good news is that with the right partner, it’s not hard. We help hardware teams, product creators, and peripheral manufacturers get through FCC and CE testing fast, allowing you to go to market without slowing down your launch timeline.

Types of Computer Input Devices We Can Test & Certify

A good rule of thumb is that if your device plugs in, charges up, or connects wirelessly, it probably needs testing. Here are the types of input devices we commonly certify for FCC & CE:

  • Wireless Mouse
Uses RF signals (typically 2.4 GHz) to communicate with the host computer. This requires FCC Part 15 testing and CE radio equipment compliance.

  • Bluetooth Mouse
Since Bluetooth operates in the 2.4 GHz band, these devices must be tested for RF emissions, transmit power, and interference potential.

  • Gaming Mouse
High-performance sensors, rapid polling rates, and added lighting features make gaming mice more complex–but they still need the same emissions and safety checks.

  • Trackball
A variation on the traditional mouse with unique ergonomics. If it’s wireless or powered, it still falls under RF and EMC testing requirements.

  • Ergonomic Mouse
These are often shaped to reduce hand strain and may include custom electronics or Bluetooth, making compliance testing a must.

  • Rechargeable Mouse
Includes batteries, power circuitry, and possibly fast-charging features. These components can introduce conducted emissions that require testing.

  • Multi-Device Mouse
Devices that can switch between different computers or platforms often use both RF and Bluetooth–so they need to comply with multiple radio standards.

What to Know About FCC & CE Certification for Computer Input Devices

FCC certification is required for all electronic products sold in the U.S. that emit radio frequency energy–and that includes both intentional (like Bluetooth) and unintentional (like USB-powered) emissions. If your mouse uses a wireless connection, it will need to go through FCC Part 15 testing.

CE certification is needed for anything sold in the European Union. Wireless devices usually fall under the Radio Equipment Directive (RED) and must also meet the EMC Directive and sometimes the Low Voltage Directive (LVD), depending on their power profile.

With FCC, you’ll need to use a certified lab and possibly get an official equipment authorization. With CE, the process is based on self-declaration–but you’re still responsible for making sure the device complies and keeping all technical documentation.

Here’s what’s typically required:

  • RF and EMC testing in an accredited lab

  • Charging circuit safety and conducted emissions checks (for rechargeable models)

  • Full technical file (manuals, schematics, test data)

  • Proper product labeling (FCC ID, CE mark)

  • Retesting if your firmware, antenna, or hardware changes
