FCC/CE Testing and Certification for Wireless-Enabled Lighting Devices

If you’re developing smart lighting products–like LED strips, smart bulbs, or WiFi-controlled neon lights–there’s more to think about than just brightness and color options. The moment your lighting device includes wireless features like WiFi, Bluetooth, or voice control, it falls under strict FCC and CE certification requirements.

Wireless-enabled lighting products are growing fast in both consumer and commercial markets, but every device that emits radio frequencies or uses electronic control circuits must comply with regional regulations before hitting shelves in the U.S. or Europe. The process might seem technical, but that’s where we come in–we help lighting innovators like you get certified quickly and hassle-free.

Types of Wireless-Enabled Lighting Devices We Can Test & Certify

If your lighting product connects wirelessly, is app-controlled, or responds to voice commands, it needs compliance testing. Here are some of the smart lighting devices we regularly handle:

  • LED Neon Lights
Flexible neon-style LEDs with wireless controllers require EMC testing and RF certification if they connect via WiFi or Bluetooth.

  • Smart Bulbs
These often include WiFi, Zigbee, or Bluetooth modules, meaning they need RF testing, EMC compliance, and CE marking for electrical safety.

  • Pixel Tube Lights
Individually addressable LEDs controlled by apps or wireless remotes must meet emissions standards and radio equipment regulations.

  • RGB Light Strips
Popular for home and commercial setups, RGB strips with wireless controllers require both RF and conducted emissions testing.

  • WiFi LED Controller
Standalone controllers that manage lighting systems over WiFi fall squarely under FCC Part 15 and CE RED compliance.

  • Bluetooth LED Lights
These lights sync with phones or other devices via Bluetooth, needing RF testing and EMC evaluations.

  • Voice-Controlled Lights
Whether integrated with Alexa, Google Assistant, or proprietary systems, voice-activated lights require thorough RF, EMC, and sometimes cybersecurity checks for CE.

What to Know About FCC & CE Certification for Wireless-Enabled Lighting Devices

For the U.S., FCC certification applies to any device that emits radio frequency energy–which includes all wireless-enabled lighting products. These devices typically fall under FCC Part 15 for unlicensed RF transmissions and must be tested for:

  • Radiated and conducted emissions

  • Spurious emissions

  • RF exposure limits (in some cases)

For Europe, CE certification is mandatory. Wireless lighting products usually need to comply with:

  • The Radio Equipment Directive (RED) for WiFi, Bluetooth, or Zigbee features

  • The EMC Directive for electromagnetic compatibility

  • The Low Voltage Directive (LVD) for electrical safety

If your lights connect to cloud services or smart home ecosystems, additional cybersecurity or interoperability standards may apply.

FCC requires accredited lab testing and sometimes formal authorization, while CE is based on self-declaration–but you’re still responsible for compliance and maintaining a detailed technical file.

Expect to need:

  • RF and EMC testing

  • Electrical safety evaluations for powered devices

  • Technical documentation (manuals, schematics, test reports)

  • Proper labeling (FCC ID, CE mark)

  • Retesting if you modify wireless modules, firmware, or power components
