FCC/CE Testing and Certification for Charging Devices

If you’re developing a charging device–like a power bank, wireless charger, or portable power station–you need to think beyond just performance and safety. Before you can sell in the U.S. or Europe, your product must pass FCC and CE certification.

Many people assume charging devices are simple, but regulators see things differently. Chargers, docks, and power banks contain electronic circuits that can cause electromagnetic interference (EMI). If your device uses wireless charging, that adds radio frequency (RF) emissions into the mix. The bottom line? Compliance is mandatory–but with the right partner, it’s a smooth process.

We help product designers, OEMs, and startups get their charging devices certified quickly so they can focus on launching, not paperwork.

Types of Charging Devices We Can Test & Certify

If your device delivers power–whether wired or wireless–it likely falls under FCC and CE regulations. Here’s a look at the charging products we regularly handle:

  • Power Bank
These portable battery packs require EMC testing for conducted and radiated emissions, plus safety evaluations for CE marking.

  • Wireless Charger
Qi-enabled or proprietary wireless chargers emit RF energy during operation, meaning both RF and EMC testing are required.

  • Charging Tray
Multi-device charging stations, especially those with wireless zones, need compliance checks for emissions and power safety.

  • Portable Power Station
Larger battery systems with AC/DC outputs require thorough EMC, safety, and in some cases, energy efficiency testing.

  • Solar Charger
Solar-powered chargers combine energy conversion electronics with USB or wireless outputs–making them subject to multiple compliance standards.

  • Fast Charging Dock
High-speed chargers can generate more EMI due to rapid power delivery, requiring detailed EMC analysis.

  • Magnetic Charger
Devices like MagSafe-style chargers use both magnetic alignment and wireless charging–so they need RF, EMC, and safety certification.

What to Know About FCC & CE Certification for Charging Devices

For products sold in the U.S., FCC certification applies to any electronic device that emits radio frequency energy–even unintentionally. Most wired charging devices are classified as unintentional radiators and require EMC testing under FCC rules. If your device includes wireless charging, it becomes an intentional radiator, falling under FCC Part 15.

In Europe, CE certification covers several directives:

  • The EMC Directive for electromagnetic emissions

  • The Low Voltage Directive (LVD) for electrical safety

  • The Radio Equipment Directive (RED) if wireless charging or RF communication is involved

FCC requires lab testing through an accredited facility and, depending on the device, formal authorization. CE is a self-declared process, but you’re still responsible for compliance and maintaining a technical file.

Typical requirements include:

  • EMC testing for emissions and immunity

  • RF testing (for wireless chargers)

  • Electrical safety evaluations (CE LVD)

  • Technical documentation (schematics, manuals, test reports)

  • Proper labeling (FCC compliance statement, CE mark)

  • Retesting if you change the design, components, or power specs
