FCC/CE Testing and Certification for Smartwatches & Wearables

If you’re developing a smartwatch or wearable device, it relies on wireless technologies such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, sensors, GPS, and maybe even cellular connectivity. This means that before you can get your product on shelves (or wrists), there’s one crucial step: FCC and CE certification.

These certifications aren’t just a formality; they’re legally required to sell your device in the U.S. and Europe. Wireless communication, radio emissions, and electronic safety are all regulated, meaning your device needs to demonstrate that it operates within accepted limits in order to go onto the market. As specialists in device testing and certification, we help hardware teams, startups, and tech innovators like you get through FCC & CE testing and compliance smoothly so you can launch without delays.

Types of Smartwatches & Wearables We Can Test & Certify

If your wearable connects wirelessly, tracks health data, or uses GPS, it falls under FCC and CE regulations. Here are some of the devices we regularly test and certify:

  • Smartwatch
Packed with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS, and sometimes LTE–smartwatches require comprehensive RF, EMC, and safety testing.

  • Fitness Tracker
These lightweight wearables often include Bluetooth connectivity and sensors for steps, heart rate, and more–all of which need compliance checks.

  • Wearable GPS
Devices with built-in GPS modules and wireless syncing must meet strict radio equipment standards in both the U.S. and EU.

  • Smart Band
Simpler than a full smartwatch but still equipped with Bluetooth and sensors–smart bands require RF testing and CE marking.

  • Heart Rate Monitor
Whether it’s a chest strap or wrist-based sensor, wireless heart rate monitors need FCC Part 15 testing and CE compliance for radio and EMC directives.

  • Sleep Tracker
Often integrated with apps via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, sleep trackers fall squarely under RF emission regulations.

  • Health Monitoring Watch
Devices that monitor multiple health metrics–like blood oxygen, ECG, or stress levels–combine medical-grade sensors with wireless tech, requiring thorough certification.

What to Know About FCC & CE Certification for Smartwatches & Wearables

For the U.S. market, FCC certification is mandatory for any device that emits radiofrequency energy–which covers every wireless wearable. Most products fall under FCC Part 15, covering Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and other unlicensed RF transmissions. You’ll need to test for radiated emissions, spurious emissions, and sometimes SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) if the device is worn on the body.

In Europe, CE certification is required. Wearables typically need to comply with the Radio Equipment Directive (RED), plus the EMC Directive and Low Voltage Directive (LVD). If your device collects health data, there may also be data privacy or cybersecurity considerations.

The key difference: FCC requires testing through an accredited lab and may involve official authorization. CE is a self-declaration process–but you’re fully responsible for compliance and must maintain a detailed technical file.

You’ll likely need:

  • RF, EMC, and SAR testing (for body-worn devices)

  • Safety evaluations for charging circuits and batteries

  • A complete technical file (including schematics, user manuals, and test reports)

  • Correct labeling (FCC ID, CE mark)

  • Compliance updates if you tweak hardware, antennas, or firmware
