Electronic devices marketed in the United States are required by law to comply with FCC Part 15, a regulation that governs use of the radio frequency (RF) spectrum.

If your device is capable of emitting radio frequency energy, whether intentionally as part of its operations or unintentionally as a result of its design and components, it needs to complete lab testing and receive FCC certification.

FCC Testing and Certification is Mandatory

FCC testing and certification is required for all electronic devices that are capable of emitting radio frequency radiation. This includes any devices that deliberately use the radio frequency spectrum, such as phones and Wi-Fi equipment (referred to as intentional radiators), and any devices that unintentionally produce RF energy (referred to as unintentional radiators).

Compliance with FCC Part 15 involves testing your device in an accredited lab and achieving equipment authorization, either via FCC certification or a Supplier’s Declaration of Conformity (SDoC).

Selling a device in the United States without FCC certification can produce significant risks for your business. The FCC regularly levies fines against non-compliant businesses, and all large US distributors will require an FCC ID to stock a radio frequency electronic device.

What Devices Need FCC Certification?

FCC Part 15 applies to all devices capable of producing radio frequency emissions, including unintentional radiators. Almost all consumer and professional electronic devices are subject to regulation under Part 15 and require certification, with few exceptions.

Devices classified as industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) equipment are regulated via FCC Part 18 and also require certification to be marketed in the United States.

Common device types that require FCC certification include:

  • Smartphones and other mobile devices
  • Cordless phones, remotes and control devices
  • TVs, Hi-Fi systems and other home entertainment equipment
  • Dishwashers, microwaves and other home appliances
  • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Internet of Things (IoT) devices
  • Electronic musical instruments and recording devices
  • Computers, printers, keyboards and other peripherals
  • Security cameras and other home security systems
  • Commercial and industrial electronic devices and equipment
  • Other consumer electronics
