If you’re located in Sweden and want to market your electronic device in the United States, you will need to complete FCC testing with an accredited lab and gain FCC certification

By law, all electronic devices capable of emitting radio frequencies (RF) are required to comply with Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations, including the FCC Part 15 rules.

These laws apply even if your device has previously received all necessary certifications to go on sale in Europe and/or other markets.

FCC Certification and American Market Access

In the United States, all electronic devices capable of emitting radio frequency energy need to comply with FCC Part 15. This regulation applies to all devices, including intentional radiators (devices that deliberately emit RF energy) and non-RF unintentional radiators

If your device contains components that intentionally emit RF energy, or if its components or circuit board layout may unintentionally produce RF emissions, it needs to complete lab tests and gain equipment authorization (via certification or the SDoC process) from the FCC.

Devices that comply with FCC regulations and receive FCC certification have an FCC ID. This ID is required to sell your device at many American retailers, and it’s also used by the public to verify that your device complies with FCC radio frequency regulations.

The FCC regularly takes action against businesses with non-compliant devices. Our list of FCC fines discusses recent legal actions taken by the FCC against manufacturers and distributors of non-compliant products.

What Devices Need FCC Testing & Certification?

FCC Part 15 applies to all electronic devices that can emit radio frequency energy. This includes all consumer electronics, home appliances, smart devices and other products. These devices all need to complete testing and receive FCC certification.

Examples of FCC Part 15 devices that require certification include:

  • Smartphones and other mobile devices
  • Cordless phones, remotes and control devices
  • TVs, Hi-Fi systems and other home entertainment equipment
  • Dishwashers, microwaves and other home appliances
  • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Internet of Things (IoT) devices
  • Electronic musical instruments and recording devices
  • Computers, printers, keyboards and other peripherals
  • Security cameras and other home security systems
  • Commercial and industrial electronic devices and equipment
  • Other consumer electronics

Furthermore, equipment used for industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) purposes are required to comply with FCC Part 18 and need to complete lab testing and receive certification.
