By law, electronic devices marketed in the United States need to comply with the FCC Part 15 rules, a set of regulations designed to limit radio frequency (RF) emissions and interference.

If you’re located in Germany and want to sell your device in the United States, this means that you’ll need to complete FCC testing and receive FCC certification for your device.

As an ANSI-accredited electronics testing lab and FCC Telecommunication Certification Body (TCB), we specialize in testing consumer and industrial electronic devices and completing the FCC certification process for our clients.

Our team has worked with many electronics manufacturers throughout Germany, including the following cities: Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Cologne, Stuttgart, Düsseldorf and others. We offer professional, readily accessible service and convenient shipping for your device from Germany to our testing facility.

What is FCC Certification?

Electronic devices sold in the United States are subject to regulations from the FCC, or Federal Communications Commission. The most significant of these regulations for electronic devices is FCC Part 15, which regulates radio frequency emissions and interference from devices.

As the government agency responsible for regulating communications by radio, television, wire, satellite, and cable, the FCC restricts emissions from devices that can interfere with these forms of communication.

Many electronic devices emit radio frequencies. This release of RF energy can potentially cause electromagnetic interference (EMI), which may cause a loss of TV or radio signal, or issues with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.

FCC certification is a procedure under which a device completes testing in a lab to verify that it functions within the parameters of FCC Part 15, then applies for equipment authorization using a Telecommunication Certification Body.

Devices with FCC certification receive an FCC ID and can legally go on sale within the United States.

Is FCC Certification Required?

By law, devices capable of causing radio frequency interference are required to be authorized by the FCC before going on sale in the United States.

FCC equipment authorization is mandatory. The FCC often takes action against businesses in the United States that sell non-compliant devices, as we’ve detailed in our list of FCC fines.

Many retailers in the United States, including Amazon and Walmart, also require FCC IDs and other compliance information for electronic radio frequency devices.

The two most common paths to FCC equipment authorization are formal FCC certification and an alternative procedure called Supplier’s Declaration of Conformity (SDoC), in which a device completes testing and is supported for equipment authorization via a declaration.

Depending on your device type, you may need to complete FCC certification or get equipment authorization via the simpler SDoC process.
