FCC Certification is Mandatory for All RF Devices in the United States

In the United States, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulates all electronic devices capable of emitting radio frequencies. This is because RF emissions from electronics can potentially interfere with TV, radio and emergency broadcasting services.

Under FCC Part 15, all electronic devices must demonstrate that they operate within specific requirements for radiated emissions, conducted emissions and electromagnetic immunity.

FCC Part 15 applies to all devices capable of emitting radio frequency waves, including those that do so intentionally (such as phones, Wi-Fi equipment and other intentional radiators) and unintentional radiators (such as computers, home appliances and other devices).

Selling a non-certified device in the United States can have significant consequences for your business. The FCC frequently fines manufacturers and distributors of non-compliant devices, and may apply additional legal actions.

Furthermore, many US retailers require that electronic devices have an FCC ID and can show compliance in order to be stocked online and in stores.

What Devices Need FCC Testing & Certification?

All devices capable of emitting radio frequency waves are subject to FCC Part 15, and thus are required to complete FCC testing and receive equipment authorization (via either certification or a Supplier’s Declaration of Conformity) before going on sale.

Devices in the following categories need FCC certification to go on sale in the United States:

  • Smartphones and other mobile devices
  • Cordless phones, remotes and control devices
  • TVs, Hi-Fi systems and other home entertainment equipment
  • Dishwashers, microwaves and other home appliances
  • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Internet of Things (IoT) devices
  • Electronic musical instruments and recording devices
  • Computers, printers, keyboards and other peripherals
  • Security cameras and other home security systems
  • Commercial and industrial electronic devices and equipment
  • Other consumer electronics
