One of the most important steps in bringing an electronic device to market in the United States is completing FCC testing and receiving equipment authorization.

By law, electronic devices sold in the United States are required to show compliance with FCC Part 15, a regulation that applies to all devices that use the radio frequency (RF) spectrum for communications and/or normal operation.

As an ANSI-accredited testing lab and Telecommunication Certification Body, we specialize in FCC testing and certification for businesses in the United Kingdom and other major markets.

Our team has worked with many electronics manufacturers and distributors throughout the UK, including in the Greater London area, Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, Liverpool and other locations.

Why is FCC Testing & Certification Required?

By law, all electronic devices marketed in the United States that are capable of emitting radio frequency waves are required to comply with FCC Part 15.

Certain devices, such as industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) equipment may be subject to other FCC regulations, such as FCC Part 18.

Compliance with FCC regulations involves testing your device in an accredited lab to verify it functions within the limits of each standard, then receiving FCC equipment authorization via a Supplier’s Declaration of Conformity (SDoC) or FCC certification.

As an ANSI-accredited testing lab and Telecommunication Certification Body, we can complete this process for you to ensure your device is compliant upon going to market in the USA.

Failing to receive FCC certification for your device can have significant consequences for your business. The FCC is known to fine non-compliant businesses, and major distributors such as Amazon, Walmart, Target and others require devices to display a valid FCC ID.

As such, it’s critical to complete the testing and certification process before you start to market your device to consumers or business customers in the United States.

What Devices Need FCC Certification?

Currently, all electronic devices that can emit radio frequency energy, even if unintentionally, are subject to FCC Part 15, meaning these devices need to be lab tested and receive authorization to go on sale in the United States.

Only a small number of specialized devices, viewable here, are exempt from Part 15 and/or Part 18 regulations.

If your device contains electrical circuitry and components, even if certain components are sold as “pre-certified” modules, it will need to be tested and receive equipment authorization.

Common device types regulated under FCC Part 15 include:

  • Smartphones and other mobile devices
  • Cordless phones, remotes and control devices
  • TVs, Hi-Fi systems and other home entertainment equipment
  • Dishwashers, microwaves and other home appliances
  • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Internet of Things (IoT) devices
  • Electronic musical instruments and recording devices
  • Computers, printers, keyboards and other peripherals
  • Security cameras and other home security systems
  • Commercial and industrial electronic devices and equipment
  • Other consumer electronics

We offer FCC testing and certification services for all device types, including consumer devices and commercial/industrial equipment.
