Electronic devices marketed in the United States are required to have equipment authorization from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The process of testing your device and receiving authorization to enter the market is referred to as FCC certification.

We offer FCC testing and certification for businesses located in Texas, allowing you to test and bring your device to market in compliance with FCC regulations.

Our team can assist you with all steps in the FCC certification process, including lab testing for your device, completing the Declaration of Conformity and certification process, and receiving your device’s FCC ID.

We also provide a complete range of additional EMC testing and certification services, including for markets such as the European Union (CE mark), Canada and others.

What Devices Require FCC Certification?

FCC regulations require that all devices capable of emitting radio frequency (RF) waves display compliance with FCC Part 15 and/or other relevant regulations.

FCC regulations apply to intentional radiators (devices that deliberately emit RF waves) and unintentional radiators (devices that emit radio frequencies as an unintentional byproduct of their design).

Common devices subject to FCC certification include:

  • Smartphones and other mobile devices
  • Cordless phones, remotes and control devices
  • TVs, Hi-Fi systems and other home entertainment equipment
  • Dishwashers, microwaves and other home appliances
  • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Internet of Things (IoT) devices
  • Electronic musical instruments and recording devices
  • Computers, printers, keyboards and other peripherals
  • Security cameras and other home security systems
  • Commercial and industrial electronic devices and equipment
  • Other consumer electronics

Intentional vs. Unintentional Radiators

Devices are classified by the FCC as either intentional or unintentional radiators, depending on their design and purpose.

Intentional radiators are devices that deliberately use radio frequencies for communication. For example, cellphones, Wi-Fi devices, Bluetooth devices and radios are classified as intentional radiators under FCC regulations.

These devices require complete FCC certification, and need to be certified by a TCB in order to enter the market.

Unintentional radiators are devices that emit radio frequencies as a byproduct of their design or components, but do not deliberately use RF for communication. Devices such as appliances or computers are typically classified as unintentional radiators.

Unintentional radiator devices still require FCC testing, but can often enter the market through a process called Supplier’s Declaration of Conformity (SDoC).

FCC Fines & Legal Action for Non-Compliant Devices

Marketing your electronic device in the United States without FCC certification can expose you to fines and other forms of legal action from the FCC. The FCC actively polices the market and takes action against manufacturers and distributors of non-compliant devices.

Our FCC fines and legal actions page provides more information about recent fines and actions taken by the FCC against devices without proper FCC certification.

With more than 60 years of experience in FCC testing and certification, our team can help you achieve FCC certification and bring your product to market faster than any other lab, letting you market your device compliantly without fear of legal action from the FCC.
