By law, electronic devices sold in the United States must comply with Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations, including FCC Part 15. Achieving compliance for your device is a multi-step testing and administrative process called FCC certification.

Completing FCC certification grants your device an FCC ID, allows you to add the FCC marking to its exterior and packaging, and provides you with legal access to the US market.

If you’re a device manufacturer located in New Jersey, we can test your device and get you FCC certification, allowing you to sell your device in the USA. Our accredited EMC lab tests hundreds of devices per year and provides FCC certification for leading electronics manufacturers.

Our team can assist you throughout the entire process and help you securely and efficiently ship your device from your location in New Jersey to our facility for testing and certification.

We can also complete other regulatory certifications for your device, including CE (Europe) and ISED (Canada), granting you market access around the world for your device.

What Devices Require FCC Certification?

FCC regulations apply to all electronic devices capable of emitting radio frequency waves (RF), whether these waves are released intentionally or unintentionally. Common devices that require FCC equipment authorization to enter the market include:

  • Smartphones and other mobile devices
  • Cordless phones, remotes and control devices
  • TVs, Hi-Fi systems and other home entertainment equipment
  • Dishwashers, microwaves and other home appliances
  • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Internet of Things (IoT) devices
  • Electronic musical instruments and recording devices
  • Computers, printers, keyboards and other peripherals
  • Security cameras and other home security systems
  • Commercial and industrial electronic devices and equipment
  • Other consumer electronics

Intentional vs. Unintentional Radiators

The FCC typically classifies electronic devices as intentional or unintentional radiators based on their design and functionality.

Your device is classified as an intentional radiator if it deliberately uses radio frequency waves to communicate. Examples of intentional radiator devices include cell phones and cellular devices, radio transmitters, and devices that use Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

Unintentional radiators are devices that do not deliberately use RF waves to communicate, but may unintentionally emit radio frequencies as a byproduct of their design. Unintentional radiator devices include many appliances, computer peripherals and non-wireless devices.

The testing and certification process will differ based on your device’s type. Intentional radiators usually require full FCC certification and a unique FCC ID, whereas some unintentional radiator devices may receive equipment authorization via a simplified SDoC process.

Our team can inform you about the appropriate compliance procedure for your device and assist with every step in the process of receiving FCC certification and market access.
