Almost all electronic devices sold in the United States are subject to Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations, including FCC Part 15 — a regulation that establishes limits on the use of radio frequencies.

To bring your device to market, you will need to complete the FCC certification process, which grants your device an FCC ID and allows for market access in the United States.

As an accredited testing lab and Telecommunications Certification Body (TCB), we can certify your device as FCC compliant, allowing you to receive equipment authorization and sell your device to the United States market.

Our team frequently works with device manufacturers in Massachusetts and can work with you every step of the way throughout the certification process, including efficiently and securely transporting your device from your location in Massachusetts to our testing facility.

Additionally, we can complete testing and certification for your electronic device for international compliance marks, such as CE (European Union) and others.

What Devices Require FCC Certification?

FCC Part 15 applies to all devices that can emit radio frequencies (RF), whether intentionally or unintentionally. All devices must demonstrate compliance with FCC Part 15, either via the FCC certification process or via a Supplier’s Declaration of Conformity (SDoC).

Common device types that require FCC certification/SDoC authorization include:

  • Smartphones and other mobile devices
  • Cordless phones, remotes and control devices
  • TVs, Hi-Fi systems and other home entertainment equipment
  • Dishwashers, microwaves and other home appliances
  • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Internet of Things (IoT) devices
  • Electronic musical instruments and recording devices
  • Computers, printers, keyboards and other peripherals
  • Security cameras and other home security systems
  • Commercial and industrial electronic devices and equipment
  • Other consumer electronics

Intentional vs. Unintentional Radiators

Electronic devices subject to FCC Part 15 are classified as intentional radiators or unintentional radiators by the FCC.

Intentional radiators are devices that deliberately use RF to communicate. For example, cellular devices such as phones, Wi-Fi devices, Bluetooth devices and radio transmitters are intentional radiators. These devices require FCC certification and an FCC ID to enter the market.

Unintentional radiators are devices that may emit RF, but do so as an unintended byproduct of their design and/or components. In certain cases, these devices may be able to enter onto the market via a simplified compliance procedure.

If you have questions about your device type or the specific compliance/certification procedure to bring it to market, please contact our engineers and we can provide you with full information about the testing and certification process.
