CE Certification is Required to Sell Your Device in Europe

All electronic devices subject to European Union directives are required to complete lab testing and receive CE certification in order to enter the market.

Completing testing and affixing the CE mark to your device confirms that your device complies with all relevant directives. A variety of directives can apply to electronic devices, including the following:

  • Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive. This directive sets requirements for electromagnetic compatibility. To comply with the EMC Directive, your device needs to pass tests for radiated emissions and electromagnetic immunity.
  • Radio Equipment Directive (RED). This directive applies to devices that make use of the radio frequency (RF) spectrum. RED testing is required for cell phones, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth devices, and other electronic equipment that uses radio frequencies.
  • Low Voltage Directive (LVD). This directive applies to consumer electronics with a voltage of 15 to 1,000 volts AC and 75 to 1,500 volts DC. It sets safety standards to protect consumers from potentially hazardous electronic equipment.
  • Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive. This directive restricts the use of hazardous substances in electronic devices and equipment. It sets limits for the use of materials such as lead, cadmium, mercury and others.

Not all of the above directives may apply to your device. Our team of engineers and regulatory compliance specialists can inform you about the specific European directives that apply to your device, the testing requirements, and the CE testing and certification process.
