FCC Certification is Mandatory to Market Your Device in the United States

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is responsible for regulating use of the radio frequency (RF) spectrum in the United States. FCC Part 15 sets performance standards for all devices capable of emitting radio frequency waves.

The purpose of FCC Part 15 is to prevent devices from interfering with radio communications, including emergency systems that use the radio frequency spectrum.

Under FCC Part 15, electronic devices must be tested to demonstrate that they operate within specific limits for radiated emissions, conducted emissions and electromagnetic immunity.

A wide range of devices are required to comply with FCC Part 15 regulations, including devices classed as intentional radiators (products that deliberately use radio frequencies, such as Wi-Fi equipment and phones) and devices classed as unintentional radiators.

The FCC regularly performs market surveillance. Selling an uncertified device may lead to fines and other legal penalties from the FCC

Many US-based retailers, such as Amazon and Walmart, require proof of FCC certification for devices capable of emitting radio frequency energy.

What Devices Need FCC Testing & Certification?

FCC Part 15 applies to all devices capable of emitting radio frequency waves, whether as part of their intentional design or as an unintended byproduct of certain components. The FCC Part 15 rules aim to limit these emissions and ensure devices function without interruptions.

Devices in the following categories require FCC certification to enter the market in the United States:

  • Smartphones and other mobile devices
  • Cordless phones, remotes and control devices
  • TVs, Hi-Fi systems and other home entertainment equipment
  • Dishwashers, microwaves and other home appliances
  • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Internet of Things (IoT) devices
  • Electronic musical instruments and recording devices
  • Computers, printers, keyboards and other peripherals
  • Security cameras and other home security systems
  • Commercial and industrial electronic devices and equipment
