FCC Certification & United States Market Access

FCC Part 15 sets performance standards for electronic devices. The key purpose of FCC Part 15 is to prevent devices from producing electromagnetic interference (EMI), which could affect communications systems and other electronic equipment.

Electromagnetic interference can occur as a result of radiated emissions, conducted emissions and a device’s electromagnetic immunity level.

FCC Part 15 requires that devices meet performance standards for these criteria. Your device will be tested in an accredited lab to verify that it meets the performance standards under Part 15.

After passing testing, your device can receive equipment authorization via FCC certification or the Supplier’s Declaration of Conformity (SDoC) process.

By law, all devices capable of emitting radio frequencies are required to complete this process before going on the market in the United States. Selling your device without completing testing and receiving equipment authorization can lead to FCC fines and/or other legal actions.

What Devices Need FCC Testing & Certification?

Almost all electronic devices capable of emitting radio frequency energy are subject to the FCC Part 15 rules. If your device can emit RF energy, whether intentionally or unintentionally, it must have FCC equipment authorization in order to enter the United States market.

Devices that require FCC certification in the United States include:

  • Smartphones and other mobile devices
  • Cordless phones, remotes and control devices
  • TVs, Hi-Fi systems and other home entertainment equipment
  • Dishwashers, microwaves and other home appliances
  • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Internet of Things (IoT) devices
  • Electronic musical instruments and recording devices
  • Computers, printers, keyboards and other peripherals
  • Security cameras and other home security systems
  • Commercial and industrial electronic devices and equipment
  • Other consumer electronics
