What Devices Require FCC Certification?
FCC regulations require that all devices capable of producing radio frequency emissions must complete testing and receive FCC certification. These FCC regulations exist to protect the RF spectrum from electromagnetic interference (EMI) that can affect electronic devices.
Devices that require FCC testing and certification include:
- Smartphones and other mobile devices
- Cordless phones, remotes and control devices
- TVs, Hi-Fi systems and other home entertainment equipment
- Dishwashers, microwaves and other home appliances
- Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Internet of Things (IoT) devices
- Electronic musical instruments and recording devices
- Computers, printers, keyboards and other peripherals
- Security cameras and other home security systems
- Commercial and industrial electronic devices and equipment
- Other consumer electronics
Intentional vs. Unintentional Radiators
FCC regulations, such as FCC Part 15, apply to both devices that deliberately communicate via radio frequency waves and devices that may inadvertently emit radio frequencies as a result of their design and/or components.
Devices that intentionally emit RF waves, such as cellphones, Wi-Fi devices, Bluetooth devices, and radio transmitters, are classified by the FCC as intentional radiators. These devices require FCC certification and a unique FCC ID to enter onto the market in the United States.
Devices that do not deliberately emit RF waves are classified as unintentional radiators. Many unintentional radiator devices can receive FCC equipment authorization and market access via an alternative process, referred to as a Supplier’s Declaration of Conformity (SDoC).
