What Devices Require FCC Certification?
Under the FCC Part 15 rules, all devices that are capable of producing RF emissions must be tested and receive FCC equipment authorization before entering the market. For most devices, this means completing FCC certification or a Supplier’s Declaration of Conformity (SDoC).
If your device fits into one of the following categories, it must complete FCC testing and receive equipment authorization before going onto the market:
- Smartphones and other mobile devices
- Cordless phones, remotes and control devices
- TVs, Hi-Fi systems and other home entertainment equipment
- Dishwashers, microwaves and other home appliances
- Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Internet of Things (IoT) devices
- Electronic musical instruments and recording devices
- Computers, printers, keyboards and other peripherals
- Security cameras and other home security systems
- Commercial and industrial electronic devices and equipment
- Other consumer electronics
Intentional vs. Unintentional Radiators
Typically, electronic devices fall under two main classes from the FCC: intentional radiators and unintentional radiators.
Intentional radiators contain hardware that deliberately emits RF waves for communication with other devices and equipment. Examples of intentional radiators include cellphone, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi devices, and radio transmitters.
Intentional radiators typically require FCC certification before going onto the market and receive a unique FCC ID.
Unintentional radiators are devices that may emit RF waves, but do so as a byproduct of design or component selection, rather than intentionally. These include many appliances, computer and office peripherals, and other non-Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and/or cellular devices.
In many cases, unintentional radiator devices can receive FCC equipment authorization using a quicker, simpler and less expensive testing and SDoC process.
