All electronic devices sold in the European Economic Area (EEA, a common market consisting of all European Union countries and Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein) are required to comply with all CE directives and regulations.

Devices that complete testing and are verified to meet the respective standards are referred to as having CE certification, allowing them to go onto the market in Europe.

CE Certification is Legally Required to Sell Your Device in Europe

All electronic devices marketed in the European Economic Area are required to pass testing to demonstrate that they comply with relevant EU directives.

This process is referred to as CE certification, and it can involve demonstrating compliance with one or several directives. The specific directives that apply to your device can vary based on its type and typically involve verifying its electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and safety.

Common directives for electronic devices include:

  • Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive. The EMC Directive establishes rules for preventing electromagnetic interference (EMI). Your device will need to meet existing standards for radiated emissions, conducted emissions and electromagnetic immunity.
  • Radio Equipment Directive (RED). The Radio Equipment Directive, or RED, applies to devices that use the radio spectrum. It sets performance standards to stop devices from interfering with radio communications and technology.
  • Low Voltage Directive (LVD). The Low Voltage Directive applies to devices in the 15 to 1,000 volts AC or 75 to 1,500 volts DC voltage ranges. This regulation sets standards to ensure that low voltage devices do not pose safety risks to end users.
  • Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive. The RoHS Directive restricts the use of potentially harmful materials, such as lead, cadmium, mercury and others, in electronic devices.

As CE compliance and certification can involve testing for a diverse range of regulations, pricing and testing processes may vary based on your device’s type and the relevant EU directives that apply to it.

Our engineering and compliance team can inform you about the specific directives you’ll need to comply with to market your device in Europe. Contact us and we’ll provide information about the certification process and a free quote for your device.
