What Devices Require FCC Certification?

The FCC requires that all devices capable of emitting radio frequencies (RF) complete testing and receive equipment authorization before entering the market.

If your device fits into any of the categories listed below, it needs to complete FCC lab testing and receive authorization to go on the market:

  • Smartphones and other mobile devices
  • Cordless phones, remotes and control devices
  • TVs, Hi-Fi systems and other home entertainment equipment
  • Dishwashers, microwaves and other home appliances
  • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Internet of Things (IoT) devices
  • Electronic musical instruments and recording devices
  • Computers, printers, keyboards and other peripherals
  • Security cameras and other home security systems
  • Commercial and industrial electronic devices and equipment
  • Other consumer electronics

Devices are classified by the FCC as either intentional or unintentional radiators, with testing and compliance requirements differing by device class.

Intentional radiators, or class A devices, are all electronic devices that emit radio frequencies deliberately in order to function. Examples of intentional radiators include cell phones or other cellular devices, Wi-Fi devices, Bluetooth devices and radio transmitters.

Unintentional radiators, or class B devices, are devices that may emit radio frequencies as a byproduct of their design, but not intentionally for functionality. Devices that do not contain a transmitter module are typically classed as unintentional radiators.

The testing, certification and authorization process may differ based on your device’s design and classification. Unintentional radiators may be eligible to receive authorization via SDoC, which can allow for simpler compliance and faster market access.

Our engineers and regulatory compliance experts can provide more information about what process your device will need to follow to gain FCC certification and access to the market.
