What Devices Require FCC Certification?

By law, all electronic devices capable of emitting radio frequencies (RF) are required to comply with FCC Part 15. Devices that complete the certification process are granted FCC Equipment Authorization, allowing market access in the United States.

Devices that require FCC certification to enter the market include:

  • Smartphones and other mobile devices
  • Cordless phones, remotes and control devices
  • TVs, Hi-Fi systems and other home entertainment equipment
  • Dishwashers, microwaves and other home appliances
  • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Internet of Things (IoT) devices
  • Electronic musical instruments and recording devices
  • Computers, printers, keyboards and other peripherals
  • Security cameras and other home security systems
  • Commercial and industrial electronic devices and equipment
  • Other consumer electronics

The FCC actively monitors the market and may take action against manufacturers and sellers of non-compliant devices, including through fines and other legal actions

Intentional vs. Unintentional Radiators

We offer testing and certification services for both intentional radiators and unintentional radiator devices.

Intentional radiators are devices that deliberately use radio frequency communication. Examples of intentional radiators include cell phones and other cellular devices, Wi-Fi equipment, products that use Bluetooth, and radio transmitters.

Unintentional radiators are devices that do not deliberately produce RF emissions. However, an unintentional radiator device may emit RF waves as an unwanted byproduct of its design and/or components.

Devices classified as unintentional radiators may be able to gain FCC equipment authorization and market access via a simplified procedure called a Declaration of Conformity (SDoC).

Our engineering and compliance team can help you to identify your device type and understand the specific testing processes required to gain FCC certification and access the market.
