The CE mark is a mandatory conformity marking for products sold within the European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA). It demonstrates that a product complies with all of the relevant European directives and is legal to sell within the European market.

Getting a CE mark for your device is a critical step in achieving market access if you intend to sell your product to European customers.

As specialists in CE testing and compliance for electronic devices, we can help you test your device and get a CE marking. Contact us online or call us at 866-540-5287 to request a free quote for your device or ask your questions to our engineering and compliance team.

Currently, the CE mark is mandatory for market access in 30 countries, including 27 Member States of the European Union and three non-EU countries that are part of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA).

EU Member States that require the CE mark for certain product groups, including electrical or electronic devices, include the following countries:

  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Bulgaria
  • Croatia
  • Cyprus
  • Czech Republic
  • Denmark
  • Estonia
  • Finland
  • France
  • Germany
  • Greece
  • Hungary
  • Ireland
  • Italy
  • Latvia
  • Lithuania
  • Luxembourg
  • Malta
  • Netherlands
  • Poland
  • Portugal
  • Romania
  • Slovakia
  • Slovenia
  • Spain
  • Sweden

The CE mark is also mandatory for products subject to EU directives sold in the following EFTA countries:

  • Iceland
  • Liechtenstein
  • Norway

Although Turkey is not part of the European Union or European Economic Area, the CE mark is accepted and required for certain products sold in the Turkish market.

Although Switzerland is located in Europe, it is not part of the EU or EEA, and as such, products sold in Switzerland do not require the CE mark.

The countries listed above require the CE mark for all devices subject to EU directives marketed and sold within their borders. However, the CE marking is not required for products made in EU or EFTA states, provided these products are sold outside of Europe.

However, these products may be subject to additional regulations and standards in the countries in which they are sold, such as FCC Part 15 rules in the United States.

Certain countries located outside the European Union and European Economic Area recognize the CE mark as a sign of compliance with their own safety regulations. These agreements vary by product type and do not apply to all products, including some electronic devices.

Countries with Mutual Recognition Agreements with the EU include the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, New Zealand and Switzerland. These agreements state that product tests for CE compliance carried out in one country are accepted in others.

It’s important to note that these agreements do not grant market access to products that have CE markings, and that many countries (including the USA) place compliance requirements on electronic devices.

In many other countries, including Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, the CE mark is closely aligned with regional regulations on certain product types. However, additional testing and certification may be required for market access in these countries.
