CE Certification is Mandatory to Sell Your Device in Europe

Almost all electronic devices sold in the European Union are required to comply with European Conformity (CE) regulatory directives. These directives are designed to ensure that electronics sold in Europe are safe and provide optimal electromagnetic performance.

EU regulations apply in all European Union countries, as well as non-EU countries that are part of the European Economic Area, such as Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein.

Compliance with CE electrical directives is generally similar to compliance with FCC and ISED regulations (United States and Canada). However, certain device types may require additional tests based on their design and/or functionality.

Most electronic devices are subject to several EU directives, including the following:

  • Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive. The EMC Directive applies to devices that emit electromagnetic waves. It sets limits to prevent interference that may affect the functioning of devices and communications networks.
  • Radio Equipment Directive (RED). The RED Directive applies to devices that use radio frequency (RF) waves for communication. It establishes EMC performance standards to protect the radio spectrum from unwanted interference.
  • Low Voltage Directive (LVD). The Low Voltage Directive establishes safety standards for electronic devices and equipment that operate in the 15-1,000 volts AC or 75-1,500 volts DC ranges.
  • Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive. The RoHS Directive applies to electronic devices and sets limits for the use of hazardous materials, such as mercury, lead, cadmium and others.

Electronic Device Types That Require CE Certification

Directives such as the EMC Directive and others apply to almost all electronic devices sold in the European Union.

Devices that require CE testing and certification include to enter the EU market include:

  • Smartphones and other mobile devices
  • Cordless phones, remotes and control devices
  • TVs, Hi-Fi systems and other home entertainment equipment
  • Dishwashers, microwaves and other home appliances
  • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Internet of Things (IoT) devices
  • Electronic musical instruments and recording devices
  • Computers, printers, keyboards and other peripherals
  • Security cameras and other home security systems
  • Commercial and industrial electronic devices and equipment
  • Other consumer electronics

Not sure which directives apply to your device? Our team can inform you about the regulatory requirements for entering the EU market based on your device’s type and design.
