All electronic devices marketed in the European Economic Area (EEA) are required, by law, to carry the CE marking, demonstrating that they comply with all relevant European Union safety and electromagnetic compatibility directives.
If you plan to market your device in the European market, you will need to complete CE testing to verify that your device is compliant before affixing the CE mark.

CE Certification is Required to Sell Your Device in Europe
By law, all electronic devices subject to European Union directives must complete lab testing to verify compliance before entering the European Economic Area market.
The European Economic Area, or EEA, consists of the countries in the European Union, as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.
CE certification and the CE mark it provides shows consumers and regulators that your device is fully compliant with all European directives for health, safety and environmental protection.
Marketing your device in Europe without CE certification can put you at risk of regulatory action, including fines and product recalls.
Several EU directives may apply to electronic devices marketed in Europe, including:
- Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive. The Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive applies to almost all electronic devices sold in Europe. It sets clear standards for electromagnetic performance to prevent electromagnetic interference (EMI).
- Radio Equipment Directive (RED). The Radio Equipment Directive applies to devices that use the radio frequency (RF) spectrum. It sets performance standards to limit radio frequency interference and improve radio frequency immunity.
- Low Voltage Directive (LVD). The Low Voltage Directive sets safety standards for all electronic devices that operate within the 15 and 1,000 volts AC and 75 to 1,500 volts DC voltage ranges.
- Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive. The RoHS Directive sets limits for hazardous materials used in electronic devices, such as lead, cadmium and other harmful substances.
Depending on your electronic device type, one or several of the directives above could apply. Our engineers and compliance specialists can inform you about the specific European Union directives that apply to your device, testing requirements and testing costs.
