By law, electronic devices marketed in the European Economic Area (EEA, all European Union countries, plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) are required to complete lab testing to verify that they comply with relevant European Union directives.

Completing lab testing and verifying that your device is compliant allows you to put the CE mark on your device and legally enter the European market.

CE Certification is Mandatory to Sell Your Device in Europe

European Union regulations state that all electronic devices subject to European directives are required to complete lab testing and verify compliance before affixing the CE mark and entering the European market.

These rules apply to all European Economic Area countries. To sell your device in Europe, you will need to verify that it meets all appropriate standards and complete the certification process before starting marketing.

Compliant devices may display the CE mark — a visual mark that demonstrates to consumers and business users that your device conforms to European standards for health, safety and environmental protection.

Electronic devices are subject to several EU directives. One or several of the directives listed below may apply to your electronic device:

  • Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive. The EMC Directive establishes limits for electromagnetic emissions and minimum performance standards for electromagnetic immunity to ensure devices do not cause interference.
  • Radio Equipment Directive (RED). The Radio Equipment Directive, or RED, applies to devices that use the radio frequency (RF) spectrum. It establishes standards to prevent radio frequency interference between devices.
  • Low Voltage Directive (LVD). The Low Voltage Directive, or LVD, applies to devices in the 15 to 1,000 volts AC or 75 to 1,500 volts DC voltage ranges and establishes safety standards.
  • Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive. The RoHS Directive limits the use of hazardous and toxic materials , such as lead, mercury, cadmium and others, in electronic devices sold in Europe.

Based on your device type, one or several EU directives may apply. You will need to complete testing for all applicable directives in order to complete the CE certification process and add the CE marking to your device.
