CE Certification is Mandatory for Electronic Devices in Europe

By law, manufacturers of electronic devices sold in the European Economic Area must verify that their device complies with all relevant European directives before entering the market.

Several directives may apply to electronic devices, including the following:

  • Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive. The EMC Directive sets performance standards for electromagnetic compatibility. Your device will need to operate within limits for radiated emissions, conducted emissions and electromagnetic immunity.
  • Radio Equipment Directive (RED). The Radio Equipment Directive, or RED, sets clear standards for radio frequency (RF) performance. Testing for RED compliance involves a series of lab tests to measure your device’s radio frequency compatibility.
  • Low Voltage Directive (LVD). The Low Voltage Directive applies to consumer electronic devices that operate in the 15 to 1,000 volts AC and 75 to 1,500 volts DC ranges. It sets standards for device safety to protect consumers.
  • Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive. The RoHS Directive requires that electronic devices comply with limits for the use of hazardous materials, including lead, mercury and others.

Your device may be subject to one or several of the directives listed above, in addition to other European Union directives. Our engineers and compliance specialists can inform you about the directives that apply to your device, testing requirements, and the CE certification process.
