CE Certification is Required to Sell Your Device in Europe
By law, electronic devices that are subject to European Union directives need to complete lab testing and receive CE certification in order to go on sale in the European Economic Area (the countries of the EU, as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway).
CE certification and the CE mark it provides demonstrates that your device is compliant with all relevant European directives for health, safety and environmental protection.
Electronic devices are subject to several EU directives, including the following:
- Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive. This directive sets limits for devices’ electromagnetic emissions and performance requirements for immunity. It’s designed to prevent electromagnetic interference (EMI).
- Radio Equipment Directive (RED). This directive applies to devices that use the radio frequency (RF) spectrum. It sets performance requirements to prevent radio frequency interference.
- Low Voltage Directive (LVD). This directive sets safety standards for devices within the 15 and 1,000 volts AC and 75 to 1,500 volts DC range.
- Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive. This directive sets limits for the use of hazardous materials, such as lead, mercury, cadmium and others, in electronic devices.
The specific European directives that apply to your device may vary based on its type, design, components and other factors. Our engineers can inform you about the testing and regulatory compliance requirements for your device.
