By law, products sold in the European Economic Area must comply with all relevant European Conformity (CE) directives and regulations. For electronic devices, these include directives for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and product safety.

Devices that complete the testing process and achieve compliance with European regulations are considered to have CE certification, and can legally enter the European market.

CE Certification is Mandatory to Market Your Device in Europe

Electronic devices sold in the European Economic Area (the EU countries, as well as Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein) are legally required to comply with all relevant EU directives.

These directives set requirements for electromagnetic compatibility, electrical safety, and the use of hazardous substances. The purpose of EU directives for electronics is to ensure safe, efficient use of the radio frequency spectrum and optimal safety for end users.

The specific directives that apply to your device may vary based on its type, design and other factors. The most common EU directives for electronics include the following:

  • Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive. This directive limits electromagnetic interference (EMI) produced by electronic devices by setting standards for radiated and conducted emissions.
  • Radio Equipment Directive (RED). This directive sets performance requirements for devices that use the radio frequency (RF) spectrum, such as cellular devices, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth equipment, and other radio devices.
  • Low Voltage Directive (LVD). This directive sets standards to ensure that low voltage devices do not create safety hazards. It applies to devices in the 15 to 1,000 volts AC and 75 to 1,500 volts DC voltage ranges.
  • Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive. This directive restricts the use of harmful substances, such as lead, mercury and others, in electronic devices.

Our engineering and compliance team can inform you about the specific directives that apply to your device and the testing and certification process.
