By law, all electronic devices subject to European Union directives are required to complete lab testing and verify compliance with regulations before going onto the European Economic Area (EEA) market.

This process is often referred to as CE certification, and it’s mandatory if you plan to bring your device to market in Europe.

Completing testing and achieving CE certification allows you to affix the CE mark to your device and legally enter the market.

CE Certification is Mandatory to Market Your Device in Europe

Like other major markets, the European Economic Area (a common market consisting of all of the European Union countries, as well as Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein) has government regulations that apply to electronic devices.

Under European Union regulations, electronic devices that can emit electromagnetic radiation are required to demonstrate compliance with all relevant European directives before they can legally enter onto the market.

Compliant devices may display the CE mark — a visual mark that demonstrates to consumers and business users that your device conforms to all European standards for health, safety and environmental protection.

Currently, European directives govern electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and electromagnetic interference (EMI), as well as areas such as product safety.

Electronic devices are subject to numerous EU directives. One or several of the directives listed below may apply to your electronic device:

  • Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive. This directive establishes standards for electromagnetic compatibility to ensure your electronic device does not interfere with other devices in a common environment.
  • Radio Equipment Directive (RED). This directive applies to devices that use the radio frequency (RF) spectrum. It establishes performance standards to prevent interference involving radio frequency devices.
  • Low Voltage Directive (LVD). This directive applies to electronic devices in the 15 to 1,000 volts AC or 75 to 1,500 volts DC voltage ranges. It establishes safety standards for applicable electronic devices.
  • Restriction of Hazardous Substance (RoHS) Directive. This directive restricts use of harmful materials, such as lead, mercury, cadmium and others, in devices sold within the European Economic Area.

Our engineers and compliance specialists can inform you about the specific directives that apply to your device, as well as the testing and certification process.
