In order to market your electronic device in the European Economic Area (EEA), your device will need to comply with European Conformity (CE) requirements.

This process, which involves testing your electronic device and affixing the CE mark, is referred to as CE compliance. Completing the CE certification process allows you to legally market your device throughout Europe.

CE Certification is Mandatory to Market Your Device in Europe

In the European Economic Area (the European Union, plus Liechtenstein, Iceland and Norway), electronic devices are subject to European regulatory directives for safety and electromagnetic compatibility.

These regulations apply to all electronic devices that are capable of producing electromagnetic interference (EMI).

In order to comply with these regulatory directives, your device must complete testing to verify that it functions within certain performance limits.

Compliant devices may display the CE mark — a compliance mark that shows to consumers in the EEA that your device complies with all relevant European standards for health, safety and environmental protection.

Common EU directives that apply to electronic devices include the following:

  • Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive. The EMC Directive establishes limits for devices’ radiated emissions to prevent electromagnetic interference.
  • Radio Equipment Directive (RED). The Radio Equipment Directive applies to devices that use the radio frequency (RF) spectrum.
  • Low Voltage Directive (LVD). The Low Voltage Directive applies to electronic devices that operate in the 15 to 1,000 volts AC or 75 to 1,500 volts DC voltage ranges.
  • Restriction of Hazardous Substance (RoHS) Directive. The RoHS Directive restricts the use of hazardous materials in electronic devices.
